What is Metastasis? What are the common sites for Metastasis?

Metastasis is the ability of the tumor cells to spread to other parts of the body and establish secondary tumors. Malignant tumors break loose from the mass and spread to other parts of the body through lymphatic system and blood stream. Extra cellular matrix will be present between the surrounding cells, tumour cells release the protease enzyme whose function is to digest the extra cellular matrix between the surrounding cells and thus enhances its metatstatic property.  Continue reading

Characteristics of Neoplasia: Differences between malignant and benign tumors

Neoplasia comprises of both malignant and benign tumors.

Benign Neoplasm:
If there are clusters of tumor cells in a single mass, they are called benign tumors. These tumors are not malignant. Benign tumors are not harmful in general, but in very less cases they may result in death if they interfere with the vital functions. The specific name of the cancer end with ‘oma’.
